Getting involved in your community

Want to know more about what’s happening in your area and the locally identified priorities that we are tackling? Then come along to the next Local Action Team (LAT) meeting which is part of the Tenants and Residents Meeting.

The idea of the LAT is to address problems of crime and disorder at a very local level and to work with residents and partner agencies to find a sustainable solution.

New members are always needed and you are urged to attend your local meeting. It need not be the case that you have a particular concern and it could just be that you feel you may have something to offer. Why not come along to your next meeting and find out more.

• The next meeting date of the Woodingdean Tenants and Residents Meeting is 03/07/2013
Come and meet me

I will attend the Meeting above and will be there 60 minutes before the start should you wish to speak with me about any issues.

Starting at 1930hrs in the Woodingdean Community Centre.

Compared to previous months’ the crime figures are high (and I am aware that possibly some crimes have not been reported to us for this months’ figures).
However -
• No burglaries to private homes reported this month.
• Fourteen of the thefts from vehicles showed no signs of forced entry which would lead to the reasonable thought that if they were left insecure (and some have admitted to leaving vehicles unlocked) these incidents could have been avoided.
• Three of the criminal damage to vehicles appears targeted at the owner.
• Other vehicle crime appears mindless vandalism though some could be as a result of passing traffic.

    CAR CRIME
A few simple steps will help prevent you from being the next victim. It takes a few seconds (and it is a lot cheaper):
    • Shut your windows
    • Lock all doors and boot
    • Take any valuables out of the car
    • Put anything that might tempt a thief in the boot or locked glove compartment
    • Park in a well lit area if possible
I am not suggesting that anyone wishes to have their property stolen but please just take an extra few minutes to help yourself.
Police have patrol activity requirements for any units in the area to be watchful for any suspicious behaviour and various items have been recovered and are/ have been forensically examined in an attempt to identify the offender. Late night patrols in marked and unmarked vehicles has been taking place. Other similar incidents nearby including Rottingdean and Saltdean have resulted in offenders being arrested and enquiries are ongoing.

FRAUD
Scam mail is now a serious and endemic problem which is causing financial and mental devastation to millions of silent victims of fraud. In 2008 a survey conducted by Help the Aged and Barclays revealed that seven out of ten older people in Britain - more than 6.6m people – are targeted by scams every month, either by telephone or letter. 22,000 victims replied to one scam mail shot and sent £500,000 in one day! 20 pensioners in Cornwall collectively sent £350,000 to criminals who work in organised gangs!
Vital Beauty, Vital Nature, Vitamail, Afibel, Best Of, Fredrich Mueller, Phyderma, Elisa Jewels, Star Shopping, Delices & Gourmandises, Biotonic & many other catalogues based abroad have been deceiving honest and trusting people out of millions of pounds for years. They make it appear like the customer is only one order away from a guaranteed prize. Unfortunately the prize never arrives; instead the victim gets bombarded with more false promises and phone calls.

All residents in Downhill View received a letter from their housing provider regarding antisocial behaviour. Some households will be receiving a visit from me later this month.

Recent email received:
This is just a quick email to inform you that SOCU executed a drugs warrant in your district and division last night (Thurs 2nd May).

At approximately 7pm SOCU executed a drugs warrant at the home address of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (previously unknown to police) - namely xxxxxx, Woodingdean. The search led to a quantity of suspected cocaine being seized. The drugs have yet to be analysed or weighed but initial estimates are a couple of ounces and a further 8 - 10 wraps in grip seal bags. Cash in various small bundles was also seized, again uncounted but guestimated to be £1,000 - £2,000.

xxxxxxx has a nice standard of living, seemingly beyond means. It would seem clear to us that xxx is a lower level but successful dealer.

xxx was arrested for PWI. xxx gave a prepared statement indicating xxx uses drugs, but is not a dealer. xxx has been bailed without charge to 27th June.

I will be liaising with our Press Dept and preparing a basic press release shortly.

I don't expect that this disruption will have any noticeable effect on Brighton's drug market, and would be very surprised if there were any adverse community impact.

Regards,

Till Sanderson
